Sir Cliff Richard opened the Wimbledon Village Fair on Saturday
24th June, 2006 to rapturous applause from thousands of adoring fans.
The Peter Pan of Pop entertained the crowd with a rendition of Summer Holiday before strolling over to the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative court to hit a few balls with a coach.
But the knock-about had to be cut short when the court was invaded by hordes of excited women, desperate to get close to their hero.
Fan Carol Bundy said: "I was lucky enough to be in the front row for Sir Cliff. It was absolutely brilliant and he was amazing."
The Fair feature a demonstration of Aikido which was presented by local members of Kikusui Kai and the
Carshalton "Evergreens".
Other highlights included a horse show, dog show, the Essex dog display team, coconut shy, climbing wall and 200 stalls. More than 15,000 people turned out on the day, which was held to raise money for the Wimbledon Guild.
